Professional Development Days (PDD)

Most California state employees receive Professional Development Days (PDD) each year. They can be used for professional association activities, seminars and other professional or personal development, and they're requested like vacation or annual leave. PDD can't be accumulated or cashed out: hours unused at the end of the year are lost.

Part-time employees receive a pro-rated amount (8 hours × time base per day). New employees receive PDD on their hire date. Retired annuitants, E-designated classes, statutory exempt employees who don't earn leave, and some seasonal classes aren't eligible. On the leave statement (ESL), PDD appears as TRNG/DEV.

Stateys credits PDD for your unit at the start of each year, removes any unused hours when the year ends, and warns you ahead of time. If you haven't entered a PDD balance, Stateys assumes you received this year's full grant and subtracts any PDD on your calendar.
